Golden Laces

How do I start my golden laces story?

Well. I guess I start with the fact that I brought a new pair of shoes. They are pink, red, white and gold Gallaz. Now, you may be thinking (if you are of the thinking variety) that Gallaz are what are worn by high school girls between the ages of 13-15, of which you are correct. However, I found myself wanting a pair of sneaker-type-shoes-that-you-don’t-do-sports-in otherwise known as “kicks”. I would not be writing this had I got the pair of blue Reeboks, but alas, there were none in my size. Instead I got these, which had boring white laces… and so my hunt for the golden laces began.

Hunting in CBD meant that I had a variety of shops from which I could possibly obtain the laces. I started with Look Sharp on Victoria St which has almost everything you could ever want. Witches hats, Santa beards and material from which you could make your own witch’s hat and Santa beard.  Alas, they did not have gold laces.

I then headed to the other end of Queen St, a lot of walking my feet did do, to Coin Max in the Westfield mall. When I asked if they sold shoeslaces the Korean behind the counter pointed to the corner and said “Underwear”. Unfortunately I am pretty hopeless when I’m trying to look for something amongst a group of things so I was staring at the underwear a while. I did find shoelaces, but alas, they did not have gold laces.

The next stop was the Warehouse which had about 3 sets of shoe laces… none of which were gold.

To $3 Japan (+GST) where they had a larger variety of laces than the previous places, but alas, they did not have gold laces.

Despite the lack of glittering string I did not give up hope. I was reminded of the time Genie sent me on a hunt to look for black sequins, but alas, the only shop that sold black sequins in the CBD had an owner that died the weeks previous and all of the stock was shipped to the Ribbon Rose in Ellerslie.

With variety shops running low I decided to think of the next place I would look for laces. The answer was simple, a shoe store! With the intention of heading down to the Number One Shoe Warehouse I marched back down Queen St. (Because I don’t walk when I’m on a mission, I march). On my way I walked past Pat Menzies which is located down a little way next to a sushi place. I remember it from two years ago when Genie brought her shoes from there, just before we went to our first Big Day Out.

I headed into the store and quickly saw that they, once again, did not sell gold shoelaces. I happened to ask one of the shop assistants (who could easily be one of the imported teachers from England at BDSC if it weren’t for his coloured sleeve tattoo) if they sold gold shoe laces. He said that, alas, they did not sell gold shoe laces. I was about to leave for Number One when he said that maybe they had some… He went over to their storage shop (where they keep their shoes) and it just so happened that a new pair of shoes did have gold laces. Well that was nice, I thought. He also said they came with THREE pairs of laces, a bit extravagant. He took out a pair of gold laces and handed them to me free of charge. It was the most fantastic thing, it completely made my day!
