Leadership Camp!!!

Wow, what awesomeness is to be had at LEADERSHIP CAMP!

It was exactly this time last week that all of the lead students headed over to Unitech in Mt Albert. EXCITEMENT!

I was excited because this meant spending a Friday and a weekend with my friends doing fun stuff.

Um… so the first thing we did when we got there was unpack the great number of bags… I had three myself. The girls and boys were split up and then we were split up into two apartments so we altogether our school leadership team was taking up 5 apartments, counting Mrs Brinsdin’s. I liked the people I shared mine with. SARANGHE!

We were doing our leadership course over at the school of sport which so happened to be on the other side of the campus which meant a good long walk at the beginning of each day. The facilitators there were awesome and wow, they learned a lot of our names. There was Glen(n), Lee-Anne, Steph and Liz who were all awesome.

On the first day we learnt about things like what is leadership with Sue and Andy and pipe cleaners, marshmellows and spaghetti sticks. There were lots of outdoor activities as well. One of the first full group challenges was using planks of wood to get to the centre of a shape which I am going to label, a square. We were in four SUB-groups and when someone touched the “distraction” (the ground) with their body or the planks of wood we ALL had to start again. This caused lots of frustration… I was just sitting back and let others take over this challenge. Everyone was talking over each other anyway so there wasn’t much point adding to this. When we finally got one of the sub-groups over we were able to get the other groups across. By the end of it we didn’t really care much about touching the grass because everyone was more focused on the end then how we got there… that’s a lesson that is. While I was chilaxing on one of the wooden islands someone passed a plank around to create a bridge between islands but as they did so they whacked me in the shin. I now have a massive bruise on my right leg. NICE!

The awesome thing about this camp compared to others is that we were given about 3-4 hours in the evening to do WHATEVER WE WANTED!!!!(on campus). The first night was really fun. We had heaps of people come to our room and we were introduced to games like “Big Booty” which we were rather crap at but had an awesome time and that racing game which didn’t last that long. My favourite game though was the picnic game in which everyone brought something to the picnic but it had a theme to it and of course golden gates which Rebecca and I introduced to the group. So fun! Heaps of laughs.

That night while Becca and I were trying to get to sleep this creep walked into our room… So, it was dark and all I could see was an outline and it looked like this guy had beard and was short/chubbyish… I was freaked out. He said “You better not cause trouble” and then I finally found the light switch. It was Dan in an old vector energy jumpsuit and a balaclava. Rebecca knew it was one of the boys whereas I thought it was some random room warden who wanted drug money… though I didn’t really tell that last bit to anyone. Then we wondered out as he tried scary others… but I didn’t have the balls to stay out especially since we were meant to be in bed.

The next night Amy was teaching people Korean when I got outta the shower. It was so funny… Becca and Kimone were such crack ups. NOT! I learnt how to count to ten. We did a tour of the other rooms and went visiting the others. So we’re back at ours and Harshi comes in and tells us what happened in the other girls’ room. *gasp* … Just saying it ended in tanties and tears.

On Friday we had Dominoes pizza for dinner… which was average but I ate much too much. The next night each whanau got to cook their own meal on a tiny gas cooker. We had lots of fun, especially since Discovery only had 5 people (’cos Alex had to go and do the Sir Edmund Hillary challenge) and we didn’t have any Head students while some other whanau had 8 people to cook for which meant we got MORE FOOD! Must say that dessert was a complete mess. Kimone and I rocked the pasta.

The last day we got to finally get our hands on the high ropes after being taught all of the skills needed to do it safely. We were split up into whanau groups and had to earn as much money as possible by investing money wisely and getting clues to solve a puzzle. It was fun! It was Ludwig, Lisa, Rebecca, Kimone and Pippa (from head student team) were in my team. One of the most gumbiest things we did was send Lisa up the ladder without a helmet. Everyone was very good and did one climb each. I did in my opinion, the easiest climb… hehe. I got two massive bruises though… and I wasn’t freaked out until the end when I had to let of the plank and trust the rope. It wasn’t very high up which is why I was all sweet with it.

This camp was so awesome and I learnt so many valuable lessons that I’ll keep with me forever… like don’t talk about people behind their back.

(Ooo… btw… just to be random. I wanna know how many times I say “awesome” {not counting that time}… I’m off to find something to eat… I’M AN EATY MONSTER!)
